As Uganda commemorated it’s 63rd independence anniversary, students of St. Theresa Girls’ Vocational Secondary School in Rushoroza Cathedral Parish Kabale District offered to express patriotism and love for their country by cleaning the litter in Kabale Municipality.

Sr. Sophia Natuhwera, head teacher of St. Theresa Girls’ Voc. S.S Rushoroza with students after cleaning Kabale Town on Thursday.

According to Sister Sophia Natuhwera, the Head teacher, the move was meant to re-awaken the citizens about caring for Mother Earth in combating human environmental pollution as well as grooming responsible girls in holistic manner to be responsible citizens who mind about the state of the environment.

Sr. Natuhwera also encouraged the citizens to involve in other ways of caring for the environment such as planting trees and flowers which is already being done at school and is good for the ecosystem.

The cleaning exercise by the students of St. Theresa Girls’ took place in the areas of Southern Division of Kabale Municipality around Rushoroza, Kitumba Trading Centre, Mwanjari weekly Market and the Mwanjari Business Centre which harbors Kabale automotive garage.

The Chairperson L.C III for Southern Division in the Municipality, Hon Mackline Kamusiime Batwale who also joined the students in the independence day celebrations  cleaning commended the school management for the initiative which she believes is part of the sensitization means to citizens who recklessly litter the environment with all sorts of garbage without bearing in mind the environmental damage that is caused.

Hon Mackline also expressed disappointment especially by the people who keep garbage inside their homes waiting to throw it by the road sides and in drainage channels during late nights emphasising that there are by-laws in place which discourage the habit and place fines on such citizens, warning that more stringent measures were going to be put in place.

Caring for the environment has recently been intensified world wide to mitigate climate change and specifically following the teaching of the Catholic Church by Pope Francis in his  encyclical letter “Laudato Si” that continues to be an eye opener that God demands man to take good care of mother earth which is the habitat for all living things created by him.
