People have been called upon to use sports activities to strengthen ties and cooperation, but also combat non communicable diseases through exercises. This call was made on Sunday, October 5, 2025 by Mr. Brian Kasaija, the Manager of Centenary Bank Rukungiri branch who encouraged the public to embrace sports, stating that it is not only an economic activity but also a vital way to prevent diseases. He emphasized the importance of physical activity in maintaining good health and reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases.

This message was given when staff of Centenary Bank Rukungiri branch had paid a visit to Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale and the two institutions faced each other indifferent sports activities like football, volleyball, athletics among other.

In football, Centenary Bank Rukungiri branch drew 2-2 with staff of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale in a friendly match held at the school’s playground on Sunday afternoon.

The sports day also featured a volleyball match between the staff of the two institutions where the staff of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School won the volleyball game by 2 sets to 0. In the tag of war, both teams ended in a draw, with each side winning one pull.

In Athletics, races for 200 metres were also held for both male and female participants and this added more excitement to the event with ululations from students of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale.

The Assistant Manager of Centenary Bank Rukungiri, Mr. Mark Muhwezi also highlighted the health benefits of sports. He noted that regular physical activity helps prevent and manage diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers. He thanked the Administration of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale for organizing the event and for their continued partnership with Centenary Bank.

The Assistant Games Teacher at Immaculate Heart Girls’ School, Mr. Michael Ahereeza added that sports can serve as an economic opportunity. He explained that developing sports talents to national or international levels can reduce unemployment in Uganda. He also noted that sports teach discipline, build friendships, and create opportunities for both personal and community development.

The Deputy Headteacher of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School, Rev. Sr. Grace Mary Naturinda appreciated Centenary Bank for the initiative. She expressed hope that the relationship between the school and the Bank would continue to grow and benefit both institutions.

She also encouraged students preparing for final exams to study hard and advised other school heads to support their learners in achieving academic success.

Rev. Fr. Mugabe Cleophas, chaplain of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale ued the opportunity to call upon religious leaders from all denominations to spare time for physical exercise amidst their busy schedules as a way of maintaining their health and preventing lifestyle or non communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes among others.

The day was crowned with a meal shared by the staff of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale and staff of Centenary Bank Rukungiri branch.
