The school started in 2016 as St. Joseph Gatete Secondary Sschool in Gatete Catholic Parish in Kisoro District.
In 2020, the Foundation Body together with Parish Council renamed it Bishop Barnabas Memorial Secondary School in memorial of Rt. Rev. Barnabas Halem’Imana (RIP) for his achievements as the second Bishop of Kabale Diocese.
The School is registered as Mixed day and boarding, with O and A levels, but currently running as an O level school.
