The Liturgy and Catechesis Commission for Kabale Diocese continues to extend the program of financial literacy lessons to catechists and their spouses as a way of helping them in the financial sustainability throughout the Diocese.
Mr. Naris Byaruhanga, Chairperson of Catechists in Kabale Diocese and head Catechist of Rushoroza Cathedral Parish while representing the Director of Liturgy and Catechesis on Thursday, December 11, 2025 thanked the catechists for the apostolate carried out and assisting priests in their ministry especially home visitation, visiting the sick and taking viaticum to them, teaching religion and instructing the people in faith.

He reminded catechists and their spouses to be examples to the people they are serving. He urged them to be hard working and innovative and stop depending on offertory. He noted how he followed the advice of Bishop Callist Rubaramira who urged the Christians to grow crops that mature in a short time like tomatoes, cabbage and Irish potatoes among others but also establish projects like poultry and piggery.
Mr. Raymond Ariho, the organizing Secretary for the Liturgy and Catechesis Commission commended the catechists for their active participation in the apostolate in Kabale Diocese. He reminded them to live a practicing sacramental life and always be well disposed but also prepare others to receive the sacraments (Ephesians 6:12).
You catechist must live by example because you have a big following being you looking up to you. Don’t scandalize them, but show them a good example by making the way, showing the way and walking the way – Raymond Ariho.
He also reminded them to inculcate the habit of record keeping, budget drawing and also develop a culture of saving, have an investment plan as this prepares them for retirement.

The catechists on their part, thanked the Diocese for their consideration and appreciating the services rendered by Catechists. They were given 1,000,000 shillings as start-up capital for the two greater centres of Nyakigugwe and Kakatunda. They chose to start a piggery project and they selected an executive committee to spearhead its supervision, and the Diocese will carry out supervision of the projects in March 2026.
Rev. Fr. Tukwasiibwe William, the Curate of St. Mary’s Bukinda Parish expressed appreciation to the Diocese for supporting parishes in evangelization and socio-economic transformation of the Christians. He thanked the Liturgy and Catechesis office for the visit to the catechists of Bukinda Parish supporting their association with start-up capital in order to boost their household income.
The same program has been Rwengiri parish in Nyakibale Deanery, Rubuguri parish in Mutolere Deanery and Rwanyena Parish in Rushoroza Deanery and later in Kakore Parish in Rubanda Deanery, Nyarushanje Parish in Kitanga Deanery and Makiro Parish in Makiro Deanery.

In Rwanyena Parish, the same financial literacy lessons were conducted by Fr. Austen Christmas, Director of Liturgy and Catechesis Commission who thanked the catechists and their spouses for time management and reminded them that time is best resource which must always be fully utilized. He also thanked the catechists for participating actively in the Jubilee Year programs and reminded them that the spirit of jubilee year should not be extinguished. He implored them to always take part in government programs and help their Christians benefit from these government programs like Parish Development Model (PDM).
Fr. Austen said that the program of financial literacy was extended to Rwanyena Parish in order to help catechists and their spouses. He concluded by thanking spouses of catechists for being supporting to their husbands in the apostolate. He encouraged them to always be exemplary to other couples so that by being examples, they may lead the Christians well.
Mr. Mugabe Jeremiah, the head catechist on behalf of the participants of Rwanyena Parish thanked Kabale Diocese for thinking about catechists in their Parish and helping them start a project to boost their income. They promised to always remain an example in the Diocese in as far as project formation is concerned.
They selected an executive committee to spearhead the supervision of the project established having been given 1,000,000 shillings as start-up capital for the two greater centres of Rwanyena and Kahungye but will be revolving fund. They promised to always pool funds and top up so that each catechist starts a project at home.

In his remarks, Fr. Deus Musinguzi, Parish Priest for Rwanyena Parish thanked the Liturgy and Catechesis Commission for choosing Rwanyena Parish for financial literacy. He said there are some projects already established among catechists like ‘send a cow’, ‘send a goat’ and ‘bring goats’ and these projects have helped catechists in their ministry. He said every month the catechists under their association visit each other and contribute over 2m for each catechist as a way of boosting their household income. Rwanyena Parish also established an Association for the retired Catechists which is intended to help them remain active but also look after themselves in old age. This association has started sheep rearing where each member is given a sheep to rear at home but also get manure for crops grown near the homestead.
